Stream Investigation: Create Your Own Leaf Pack Experiment!
Date: Friday, May 10, 2024 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Location: Two Mile Run County Park, Pioneer Flats
The Venango Conservation District is hosting a family-friendly stream investigation event to provide a fun and educational afternoon learning about aquatic stream species and their role in determining ecosystem health. Participants will learn how to sample and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates, determine water quality, and create your own Leaf Pack Experiment!
Conducting a leaf pack experiment by placing artificial leaf packs in the stream replicates the natural process of leaves forming packs in streams. Created by the Stroud Water Research Center, leaf pack experiments are used by teachers, students, and citizen scientists to investigate their local waterways. We will investigate what macroinvertebrates utilize these leaf packs and use them to identify the water quality of Two Mile Run. Learn more about leaf pack experiments here.
This activity will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather. Be sure to wear shoes such as boots or old sneakers to walk in the creek (ankle to knee-deep water). This event is free and open to the public.
To register, please contact Bailey Kozalla by calling 814-676-2832 ext. 2 or email bkozalla.vcd@gmail.com or fill out the RSVP form linked below.
